Our almost 70 strong network of franchises are actively seeking first aid trainers to join their busy teams. From teaching our signature 2 hour Baby and Child class, to teaching children in nurseries and schools, right the way through to teaching workplace first aid, our Mini First Aid trainers have a huge variety of highly flexible opportunities.
We welcome trainers with a background in first aid, but this role is also suitable for teachers, those who have worked in the NHS or simply people with the enthusiasm and passion to train as many people in life-saving first aid as possible. If you don’t have a background in first aid we will help you access training to be able to confidently teach our courses.
Too good to be true? Two of our current trainers, Marisa and Lisa talk you through what life is like as a Mini First Aid (MFA) Trainer:
Marisa’s story
“Hi, I’m Marisa and I work with Jen, Lisa, Gill and Sam at MFA Sussex! My background is as a dental nurse, and I was looking for something extra to fit around my part time hours. I’ve gradually done the training to teach more and more MFA courses, starting with baby and child first aid but more recently I’ve been teaching a lot of workplace courses.
A typical day will start the night before – ensuring everything is packed and ready to go! Once I arrive, I make sure everything is set up ready for the class or course I am teaching, I then greet people and ensure they are comfortable before we begin. My classes are always full of laughter - first aid is a serious subject, but I know people will definitely remember a fun class over a boring one! At the end, if I need any paperwork signing I will do this, before clearing away and packing up. If it’s a weekend, I usually fit two baby and child classes in to a day, so I’ll pack up to drive to my next venue and start again!
The amount of work I do has increased steadily and at the start of this year, I decided to step back from my role training dental nurses and do more with Mini First Aid. The franchise owner, Jen has always encouraged my progression and I always feel motivated to find more work – after all it is beneficial to me too. I talk to EVERYONE about what I do, I am so proud to be part of the MFA Sussex team.”
Lisa’s story
“Hi, I’m Lisa (pictured top, teaching a class) and I also work for MFA Sussex. I have been working in Early Years for the past 37 years (I still do!) and have been a nanny, maternity nurse, nursery practitioner, deputy manager & manager of a number of nursery settings in that time.
I met Jen, the franchise owner through a local childcare network and now teach MFA’s Baby and Child class, Paediatric First Aid, First Aid at Work, Kids and Teens classes in schools and our Healthy Minds workshops. I absolutely love the variety this affords me. A typical day involves training at a venue rented by the franchise owner, or perhaps at a local school. The length of my day is driven by which class I’m teaching so there is lots of flexibility within the role”.
If Marisa and Lisa's story's have convinced you, you can find our Join Us page here. I also asked them both a couple of key questions to help with your decision making:
What qualities are needed to be a trainer for MFA?
Lisa says being organised, knowledgeable about your subject (full training is provided if needed), confident, friendly and patient are key qualities for this role.
Marisa adds that you need to be adaptable and aware of the physical demands of the job, as well as engaging, fun and willing to listen and learn.
Why should other people apply to be a trainer for MFA?
Marisa says that “being an MFA trainer is a great opportunity – it gives you a flexible role, with excellent pay. Being self-employed can be scary, especially if you’ve never taken the step before, however, as a contractor, a lot of the hassle of chasing people for unpaid invoices is taken away from you. You have the ability to say when you’re available to take a class/course and depending on your franchise owner, you might be offered admin opportunities too.”
Lisa adds that she has found that the flexibility to work around other work commitments and her family is a real bonus. She also loves “the rewarding feeling knowing that you are empowering people (particularly parents/carers) with life skills that could be crucial in emergency situations.”
