This week Mini First Aid is celebrating our fifth birthday. Training 1000's of families each week all our Mini First Aid trainers without exception can tell you at the drop of a hat why they do what they do. But there is nothing more powerful than hearing stories from parents who attend our classes. And Caroline’s story is no exception:
It should have been an exciting day. Caroline Crotty had registered the birth of her 5 week old son Kevin and was on her way home, when he suddenly stopped breathing in his car seat. Literally every parent’s worst nightmare. Thankfully, Caroline stayed calm and knew exactly what to do as she had attended a Mini First Aid class 2 days earlier. Caroline performed baby CPR on Kevin and ultimately, saved his life. Kevin has since made a full recovery.
The doctors weren’t able to say for sure why Kevin had stopped breathing and think it is unlikely to happen again. He may have choked on mucus while crying or just decided it was too difficult to breathe and given up. Caroline’s words say it all:
“The course saved my little boy’s life. If I hadn’t have done it, I would have panicked and the outcome could have been very different.”
Since then, Caroline has turned what happened with Kevin into a real positive. Encouraged by Gemma, her Mini First Aid trainer; Caroline decided to learn more about first aid and has completed her full 12 hour paediatric first aid course, aimed at child care professionals. Brilliant.
Caroline’s story has been featured in the press, encouraging parents to learn baby and children first aid. She knows first-hand just how important it is to stay calm and act quickly. Caroline’s story is why we do what we do.
