As children grow, their needs change – and that includes their bath and shower routine. But when is the right time to move on from baby toiletries, and what should you look for instead? In this guest blog, The Kids Bathing Co. explores the often-overlooked years between babyhood and adulthood, and shares some helpful advice for choosing products for your child’s developing skin and hair.
There comes a moment in every parent's journey when your little one suddenly announces “I'm not a baby anymore!”
Perhaps they want to choose their own clothes, brush their own hair or use your toiletries instead of theirs. And while independence is something to celebrate, it can leave parents with a whole new set of questions. When should my child stop using baby toiletries? Are they ready for adult products? And are adult shampoos and shower gels actually suitable for their still-developing skin and hair?
The answer isn't as simple as a particular birthday. There is no magic age when a child suddenly needs to swap baby products for adult toiletries. For many parents, moving from the gentle products they have trusted for years to adult formulations can feel like a big leap.
But there is a stage that often gets overlooked: the years in between.
A time when children are no longer babies, but aren't little adults either. Their personalities, independence, skin, hair and hygiene needs are all changing - yet finding products designed specifically for this stage can be surprisingly difficult.
"I'm not a baby anymore" shouldn't mean rushing into adult toiletries
Walk down the baby personal care aisle and you’ll often find pastel bottles, cartoon animals and sweet, fruity, babyish scents.
But children are growing up differently, they are growing out of the "baby aesthetic" faster than ever. They don't want cartoons on their toiletries; they want to feel independent and have products that feel like their own.
At the same time, their needs are changing too.
They're running around outside, swimming, playing sport and getting covered in mud, sweat and playground grime. Their hair is getting thicker, longer and often much more difficult to manage.
Suddenly, the baby toiletries that worked brilliantly don’t quite work as well anymore.
This is where many parents find themselves stuck between two choices: baby toiletries that feel too babyish and don't always meet their child's changing needs, or adult products that weren't designed with children's developing skin and hair in mind.
Children’s skin and hair are different from both babies and adults
Children sit in a unique stage between babyhood and adulthood and their skin and hair do too.
Their skin is no longer as delicate as a baby's, but it hasn't yet developed the maturity and resilience of adult skin. While they may have outgrown the ultra-mild baby formulations, that doesn’t necessarily mean adult shower gels and shampoos are the right next step.
Their hair changes too. Gone is the soft, fine baby fuzz. As children grow, their hair becomes thicker, stronger and often longer, bringing with it more tangles and a greater need for effective cleansing and conditioning.
Adult haircare is often formulated to remove the build-up of styling products such as hairspray, gels - products that children generally don't use.
Children therefore need something in between: products effective enough to tackle playground dirt, sweat and the everyday grime that comes with being a child, yet gentle enough to respect their developing skin and hair.
Why “Grown-Up” matters to kids
As children become more independent, they begin developing their own preferences and identities. They notice what their parents and older siblings use and naturally want products that make them feel more grown-up.
Traditional baby products often rely on vanilla, lavender or sweet fruity fragrances because they signal “gentle” to parents. But children don’t necessarily want to smell like babies.
They may prefer something fresh, sophisticated and more grown-up, the kind they smell on their older siblings or parents.
And a sophisticated fragrance doesn't automatically mean a product isn't suitable for children. What matters is the quality of the fragrance, how it has been formulated and the level at which it is used within the finished product.
This is an important part of the transition: giving children an experience they love without asking parents to compromise on what they want from a children's product.
The Kids Bathing Co. Made for the years in between
I didn't set out to start a cosmetics company. I just wanted to bath my three-year-old without a negotiation.
It started in our own home, with a stubbornly independent three-year-old and a bottle of baby wash that simply wasn't cutting it anymore.
My daughter was coming home covered in playground dirt, felt tips and sweat, proudly declaring, “I'm not a baby anymore,” while reaching for my body wash.
While I was navigating these daily bath time negotiations at home, my husband, a Doctor was seeing the aftermath in his clinic. He was treating children with dry and irritated skin. The culprit? Adult bathing products. Parents, just like us, realised that gentle baby soap couldn't scrub away big-kid grime or tame tangled hair, so they were improvising with adult formulas. Formulas packed with harsh surfactants and chemicals that young, delicate scalp and skin barriers simply aren't equipped to handle.
We began to realise how many parents were facing the same dilemma: products designed for babies at one end, products designed for adults at the other, and very little in between.
We needed something tougher than baby wash, but specifically formulated for kids. When we went looking for it, we realised it didn't exist. So we decided to build the bridge ourselves.
Combining my determination to create something premium yet affordable that children actually want to use, with my husband's clinical medical experience, The Kids Bathing Co. was born.
We spent months developing premium, purpose-built formulas designed specifically for children in this often-forgotten stage.
Our goal was simple: tough enough to tackle the reality of childhood, yet wonderfully gentle on developing skin and hair.
We refused to compromise, meticulously sourcing premium ingredients that deliver a rich, effective lather to wash away the wildest days, while fiercely protecting their developing skin and scalp.
But we didn't stop at the science. We knew that to win over a four-going-on-fourteen year old, the experience had to feel wonderfully grown-up. We moved away from babyish packaging and scents, creating products that kids are proud to call their own.
Our mission is simple: To give kids the premium, grown-up experience they fiercely crave, backed by the rigorous, clinical safety parents demand.
Winner of Made For Mums Gold 2026 and Mintel’s Most Innovative 2026 for Europe, Middle East and Africa, we’re incredibly proud to be recognised for pioneering a category designed specifically for the years in between.
We didn't create another body wash. We recognised a completely forgotten stage of childhood!
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for when choosing a toiletry for my child?
With so many products and claims on the shelves, choosing the right toiletries for your child can feel overwhelming.
Rather than focusing on how many ingredient a product contains or being swayed by clever marketing, look for products that have been independently tested and carry recognised accreditations that give you confidence in their safety and suitability.
Look for credentials such as Dermatologically tested, Paediatrician approved and suitable for sensitive skin. These can provide reassurance that a product has been developed with children's needs in mind.
Finally, ask yourself, “will my child actually want to use it?” This one is often overlooked, but creating positive hygiene habits can start with giving children products they enjoy using.
At The Kids Bathing Co. all of our products are Dermatologically tested, Paediatrician approved, free from sulphates, suitable for sensitive skin, and are proudly made in England.
Is “100% natural” always best?
When choosing children's toiletries, it's easy to assume that the more “natural” a product is, the better it must be. But cosmetic formulation isn't quite that simple.
Water-based products such as shampoos, conditioners and creams need effective preservation systems to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and mould.
Natural ingredients can also vary between harvests. Using a carefully considered blend of natural and nature-identical ingredients can help provide consistency from one batch to the next.
It's also worth understanding the difference between “natural” and “naturally derived”. Many brands lean heavily on the term “naturally derived” in their marketing, but this can be misleading. “Naturally derived” simply means an ingredient started from a natural source but has been chemically processed, sometimes to the point where it is very different from the original material. These ingredients are not the same as truly natural ingredients, even though they’re often presented that way.
Ultimately, a well-formulated product needs to balance ingredients carefully to provide safety, stability, consistency and performance.
Are fragranced products bad for my child?
Not necessarily. A fragranced product doesn't mean it’s not suitable for children. What matters is the quality of the fragrance, how it has been formulated and the level at which it is used in the finished product.
At The Kids Bathing Co. we carefully select premium-quality fragrances and formulate our products specifically with children’s developing skin in mind. All of our products are certified suitable for sensitive skin, with fragrance inclusion levels are 1% or less in the finished formula.
For us, it's about finding the right balance: creating sophisticated fragranced toiletries that make children feel wonderfully grown-up, without the harsh irritants that can cause irritation.
How often should I wash my child's hair?
Washing your child's hair too often can strip away some of the natural oils that help protect the hair and scalp, potentially leaving it feeling dry.
On the other hand, not washing it often enough can allow a build-up of sweat, oil and dirt, which can leave the scalp feeling greasy, itchy or flaky.
For most children, washing their hair 2–3 times a week is enough to keep it clean and healthy.
However, children who swim regularly, play lots of sport or have an oilier scalp may need to wash their hair more frequently. Curly, textured or particularly dry hair may benefit from less frequent washing and additional conditioning.
The Kids Bathing Co. Multivitamin Shampoo & Conditioner has been specially formulated for children's hair, combining vitamins B3, B5, C and E to help keep hair feeling clean, soft and healthy after every wash.
Does my child need conditioner?
For children with short, fine or easy-to-manage hair, shampoo alone may be all they need. However, children with longer, thicker, curly or particularly dry hair may find conditioner helpful for softening the hair, making it easier to manage and reducing tangles.
A good-quality conditioner should help minimise tangles, so you shouldn’t need to rely on additional products such as detangling sprays.
So, when should my child stop using baby toiletries?
The honest answer is: there’s no set age.
If your child’s current baby toiletries are working well and their skin and hair are happy, there’s no need to stop using them simply because they’ve reached a certain birthday.
However, many children naturally outgrow baby toiletries, both emotionally and practically.
They might start telling you that their shampoo is “for babies”, want to use the products you use, or become more interested in products that feel a little more grown-up. Sometimes, their baby toiletries simply don’t meet their changing skin and haircare needs either.
That’s where age-appropriate children’s toiletries can provide a useful middle ground.
The goal isn’t to rush children into using adult products. It’s about finding products that recognise they’re no longer babies, while still being specially designed for children.
